Join us for our next live international panel discussion with leading experts in the field of laryngectomy, to explore the impact of surgical techniques on tracheoesophageal voice and swallowing.

Dr Claudio Parrilla will begin with an overview of Total Laryngectomy surgical techniques performed at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome. Following his presentation, the panel of experts will discuss how to optimize stoma creation and voice quality, while minimizing stoma stenosis, hypertonicity and dysphagia. The audience will also have the opportunity to ask live questions.

Expert panel

Dr. Claudio Parrilla

Dr. Claudio Parrilla, MD PhD is a Head and Neck Surgeon at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy. Dr. Parrilla graduated from the Catholic University of Sacred Heart in Rome and completed his Residentship at the Gemelli Hospital with partnership at Center Hospital University CHU in Nantes, France. He did his PhD at Catholic University of Sacred Heart, in Rome as well as a post-doc Fellowship in Hannover.    

Since 2012, Dr. Parilla has been the scientific coordinator of the annual international course on Voice Prosthesis rehabilitation in Rome, in the international Global Post-Laryngectomy Rehabilitation Academy (GPRA) Program. He is member of the Italian Society of Otolarngology (SIO) and the Italian Society of cervico-cephalic Oncology (AIOCC). He has more than 60 Publications focused predominantly on Head and Neck cancer and has published in the field of Voice Prosthesis Rehabilitation in Laryngectomized patients. 

Dr. David M. Cognetti

Dr. David M. Cognetti, MD is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University and is a member of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Cognetti received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.  He completed his residency training in Otolaryngology at Jefferson prior to returning to the University of Pittsburgh for a one-year fellowship in Advanced Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery. 

Dr. Cognetti currently serves as Director of the Jefferson Center for Head and Neck Surgery as well as President for Pennsylvania Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. His clinical and research interests focus on less invasive approaches in the head and neck including transoral robotic surgery, endoscopic laser surgery, sentinel node biopsy, and sialendoscopy.

Dr. Francesc Xavier Avilés Jurado

Dr. Francesc Xavier Avilés Jurado, MD, PhD is Head of the Head and Neck Tumors Unit at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. He is visiting Professor at the University of Barcelona and Co-Head of the Head and Neck Oncology Research Line. His work focuses on various aspects of head and neck cancer, including local control of disease in patients with oral cavity carcinomas, predictors of response after curative chemoradiotherapy and the impact of diabetes in head and neck cancer.

Rina Abrams

Rina Abrams, MS, CCC-SLP holds a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Language and Hearing Sciences from the University of Colorado and a Master of Science from the Medical University of South Carolina.  She is an Assistant Professor, Co-Director of the Multidisciplinary Dysphagia and Deglutition Clinic, and Lead Head and Neck Speech Pathologist at Johns Hopkins University in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.  Her primary clinical focus is dysphagia, head and neck cancer and alaryngeal speech.  She also serves as adjunct faculty at the University of Maryland and Towson University.  She lectures locally and nationally and publishes on head and neck cancer rehabilitation.
